Much of the past few days have been spent working on a rather onerous project management assignment for the hypothetical development of a Target UK branch, taking into account the interesting disaster that was Target Canada. The difficulty of the assignment was partially length, but also the required inclusion of a presentation and notes, which really wasn't necessary or appropriate. It wasn't helped by the course coordinator providing rather different suggestions on what the content should be in the assignment brief and in the class forums (if I ever do that, slap me with a fish).

Despite this still have managed to fit in a couple of social events this weekend, including attending Matt W's housewarming-cum-birthday in Carlton. A rather gorgeous modern two-story apartment with exceptional views of the inner northern suburbs. Good conversation and cheer from a gathering that started and ended relatively early (gone are the days when I'd go home as the birds were waking up, I suspect). The other gathering of note was today's gaming session of Eclipse Phase. The PC Proxies are having all sorts of external and internal trouble as war is hotting up, blackmail occurred and one of their party is revealed as a double, if not triple, agent, whilst at the same time arranging for a hive-mind community to potentially gain access to enhanced psychic powers. Sounds like an X-risk, right there. The session concluded with a Quentin Tarantino-like feel with a posse arranged with some itchy-trigger Sentinels.

Way back in the early 90s when I shared a dilapidated house with [personal profile] reddragdiva, I was introduced to a band called New Waver, whose EP Darwin Junior High really tickled my sense of cultural elitism. Since then they have do a magnificent set of altered covers, available on Bandcamp, Bohemian Suburb Rhaspody. Anyway, it was quite a pleasure to discover that the main force behind the project is now a lecturer in CompSci in the same building as I work in, so I spent a good couple of hours last week talking about culture and music with him - and I suspect more such discussions are around the corner. If only I had some artistic skill of my own I could contribute in a practical manner.

The Earthworker Cooperative, a community-led cooperative, has a debenture system being offered to members - it retains its democratic system of ownership and management, but also allows for members to effectively invest with returns. I've decided to put a few thousand dollars of my savings into this loan scheme and am very interested in exploring the possibility for other cooperative ventures. There is, of course, a good variety of non-capitalist organisational models which are often overlooked from the standard for-profit company; incorporated associations, co-operatives, research agencies, statutory authorities, etc - and as this example shows, they have a variety of ways of raising necessary funds to further their aims.

Speaking of non-profit research agencies, spent a good portion of the last week preparing training material for multiple courses that I'll be running for the University of Sydney later in the near future. Three course books, about 15,000 words a piece, with a fair bit of material derived from previous courses but tailored for the specific software that will be utilised. From what I understand I'll be taking two trips (end of January and March), and somewhere in between that a three-day session at La Trobe University in early February and a three-day session at the University of Western Australia. In less exciting news, we're in the final stage of the review of project management procedures and tools which, in a delicious act of recursion, was a project which I managed in its own right. The procedures a lot more watertight than what we've had previously, mainly following the PRINCE2 framework for governance. The tools section has been left somewhat more varied, which I'm less happy with.

Thursday night was what will probably be the second last session of The Great Pendragon Campaign which dealt primarily with the increasingly strained relationship between Lancelot and Guinevere. Current plans for the next game will be The Laundry Files, which will be a very different style and subject matter. Probably worth mentioning that, following three years or so of recreating this story, on February 1st I'll be giving an address on the subject at the Melbourne Unitarian Church, entitled: The Once And Future King : Mythology and Motivation from the Arthurian Legends.

Had a non-cheesequest event today with [livejournal.com profile] ser_pounce and [livejournal.com profile] hathhalla, so named as ser_pounce, our maƮtre de fromage, is possibly allergic to lactose! I did however make a safe goat's cheesecake with a berry coulis. We played Hoax, another superb game from that old company, Eon Products, and then Six Billion, whom I once organised a demonstration session with the designer - an excellent if a little complex. We watched the second season of Morel Orel and in the evening [livejournal.com profile] caseopaya and I watched Uli Lommel's version of The Raven, a comically bad horror film (but which a reviewer generated a brilliantly appropriate poem)

Went to a Novell and Attachmate breakfast presentation on Tuesday at Vue du Monde. The view was pleasant (at level 55 of the Rialto building), but the actual talks were too high level (haha, see what I did there?). It was orientated towards suits, and didn't really provide enough technical details. Absolutely floored when one representative started talking about the new products which allow secure connection to Linux/UNIX systems. Reminded later that in the MS-Windows world people actually sell SSH, SFTP, and NFS clients (all of which are free and open source). On related subjects, have written a brief how-to for installing Linux with OEM MS-Windows installs, and this morning a discussion on file creation time for Linux which I used an supplementary discussion for Wen Lin's presentation at Linux Users of Victoria beginners workshop on introducting the Linux command line.

On a related subject work has been quite interesting this week with regards to project management, both in the actual delivery and the development of new policy and procedures. Increasingly it becomes apparent that projects fall into a mess when procedures are not followed. Trying to run complex tasks without a framework simply doesn't work. Now whilst PRINCE2 is sometimes criticised for not providing much in terms of reporting metrics (unlike PMBoK, which does provide very sophisticate metrics for analysis), it is more about governance rather than delivery as such, and notably PMBoK doesn't provide much for governance! Despite how useful analysis is, the governance is also necessary to ensure communication within a team. As a result, in addition to simple statement of governance developed a fortnight ago, a simple checklist and graphic representation of flowchart has been put together.

As a strange aside, recently encountered two examples of cyborg sex, one deliberate and one not so much. Firstly, a man admits to having sex with over 700 cars (and even an attack helicopter). I think of The Normal's Warm Leatherette; Bryce D. reminds me of Grace Jones' Pull Up to the Bumper. All hat-tip to [personal profile] reddragdiva, who also does the right thing by referencing the late and great J.G. Ballard. Meanwhile Nigel S., has gone into surgury for hip replacement, which is pretty cyborg too. The 'Information Booklet on Your Total Hip Joint Replacement' booklet he received includes the lines "You can discuss returning to sexual activity with your surgeon at your follow up appointment". As he says, "One interpretation of this would not, I suspect, go down too well with the Australian Medical Association's ethics committee."
