Today is Sysadmin Appreciation Day, which has the acronym SAD for usually good reason. But this year, both [livejournal.com profile] caseopaya and [livejournal.com profile] horngirl mentioned it (falls over)! For my part, I have fun installing Ultrascan today; the short post belittles the effort expended. And this is why some of us look like gold - some very naughty PC repair shops (hat-tip [personal profile] reddragdiva. Finally, in the "WTF?" department, Volomedia awarded the patent for podcasting.

Preparations are underway for the Indonesia journey starting next week. Arrive in Bali on Tuesday afternoon, will probably stay in Sanur then make our way to Ubud then across to eastern and central Java; Surabaya, Semerang and Yogyakarta before turning back. Very much wish to spend some time working on a anthropological comparison between Borobudur, Prambanan and animist worship of Merapi. I'd dearly love to visit Borneo and Sulawesi, but I rather suspect that will be difficult within the two-week window.

Two major social events to report on; one was the visit of [livejournal.com profile] mr_figgy, all the way from the land of the red maple leaf. The other, equally red, was seeing Anitra Nelson's play Servant of the Revolution, which explored the rarely commented relationship between the Karl Marx, Helene Demuth and Frederich Engels. With a modest set and much of the performance based around the tension and debates between the latter two characters and the never-ending debate between the real and ideal.

ah... look forward to hearing about Indonesia and your discoveries, particularly after the 'terrorist event' of recent history.

cheers and have fun!

It was only hours after reports of the Bali bombing in 2002 that I decided to book a visit there....

The operating logic of terrorist organisations of this ilk is to create the feeling and psychology of a frontline war. By recognising the limits of their ability, their main power is disarmed.

Sysadmin appreciation day is an odd day. it's like an anniversary in an abusive relationship. I know that nobody got me anything, but they think it's just Friday.

Heh, that's not a bad metaphor. I used to just consider it somebody's idea of a sick joke.

In a moment of optimism, our manager sent notification of the day to all staff... Didn't do anything of course.

It's a bizarre profession. Everyone ignores you've got everything working smoothly, and everyone wants a pound of your flesh if when they're not.
