My recollections of Melbourne as a continental city was impressed on my first visit in 1986. As such, it is always a bit of a rude shock when I'm confronted with the invasion from the outer suburbs of the limited Australian cultural expression of sport, sport and more sport, even if they are international events. The Commonwealth games disrupted public transport causing me to miss a lecture I was supposed to give (fortunately it has been postponed). The Grand Prix has been noisy as usual with the added bonus of screaming jet planes.
All this contrasts strongly with a delightful dinner last week with myself,
caseopaya,
severina_242 and
_zombiemonkey at Borsch, Vodka and Tears on Chapel St. They were even playing one of my favourite European musicians, Jacques Brel. I know which Melbourne I prefer.
If there are people out there in el-jay land who still haven't seen it or would like to see it again,
caseopaya and I are arranging a group to see V for Vendetta. Come around our place (1/40 Eildon Rd St Kilda) before 9pm this Wednesday the 5th) and we'll wander down to The George cinema (a mere three minutes walk away) to catch the 9.15pm session. Don't be late!
In other St. Kilda related news, we're seriously thinking of moving to Yarraville or similar. Real estate in St Kilda is overpriced at the moment, and I'm a little tired of drunks, tourists and drunk tourists. I'd much rather have the traditional junkies and whores back in my neighbourhood. At least they were quiet and didn't start fights in the street.
My livejournal entries wouldn't be complete without gaming news. Another session of Outbreak of Heresy last weekend which went very well. Finishing off my playtester's notes for Deluxe Basic Role Playing in the next couple of days. Also working on a mini-campaign based on The English Civil War, the Commonwealth and the Restoration, using said system. In the Melbourne Role Playing Salon, we've plotted out the next several months of gaming using mainly indie and narrativist systems - there's a couple more sessions of Dogs in the Vineyard, followed by Jeff running HeroQuest, then Erica is running Little Fears, Rafe will follow with In Nomine and finally I'll be running Everway. Along with an Easter Friday special one-off of GURPS Bunnies & Burrows.
This Sunday is a special event at the Melbourne Unitarian Church. A quality speaker of no less stature than Andrew Chalmers, President of Linux Users of Victoria, speaking on "Public Science and Proprietary Science". He doesn't know it yet, but I'm conducting the service. Afterwards, I'm also introducing the discussion for the Church Philosophy group on the topic "Commonwealth versus Stolenwealth" an elaboration into the nitty gritty of a service I gave last year on Providence and Common Wealth.

Date: 2006-04-03 09:45 pm (UTC)Hey excellent, it's like having a virtual stalker ;-).
Swapping the Astor for The Sun cinema. Swapping small flats for large houses. I think Yarraville has a lot going for it.
And besides, I'll finally be off the #96 tram route... That's been going on for years.
V for Vendetta

Date: 2006-04-03 11:33 am (UTC)But its a fun film...worth seeing...on DVD.
Sickly sweat social commentary and weak WEAK scripting. Ungh... Oh well.
BTW the authors name has been removed from the print I viewed on Saturday.
I believe at his request ...
Re: V for Vendetta
Date: 2006-04-03 09:48 pm (UTC)I've heard mixed reviews of the film. No-one has said it's terrible. Alan Moore apparently isn't happy.

Date: 2006-04-04 12:13 am (UTC)OK, thanks for the heads-up on Serenity. League was pretty awful. And I think you're right about Alan Moore as well.
Can you imagine Watchmen as a film?
TV Series vs Films
Date: 2006-04-04 12:33 am (UTC)The whole point about FROM HELL was that it was from the Ripper's point of view, and was one of the few Ripper books that actually treats the victims as human beings. A "slow burn", over say, 4 x 2 hour episodes, would have been (maybe) riviting television.
WATCHMAN would be the same thing. The breakdown would be probably a six part series of two hours each. Otherwise, the characterisations, which Watchmen depends upon, would be lost in the action. Ideally, even if we didn't like Rorschak at all, by the end of the series we'd care about his not playing along with Ozymandias, and his death.
But - they'll make a film instead - you see...
Re: TV Series vs Films
Date: 2006-04-04 01:59 am (UTC)You're quite right, it would be very hard to the deep characteristations that Watchmen depends on - even if a lot of the plot is quite extraneous. I don't think it's impossible as a film, just very challenging.

Date: 2006-04-03 09:57 pm (UTC)First I read.. "the My Little Pony RPG marks an exciting d20 experience for girls ages 3-7, a previously unexplored segment of the roleplaying game marketplace" and I was screaming for Satan to slay the board of Hasbro.
Then I looked at the date of the press release. Heh. Smart-arses.
How about Snakes on a Plane!
Re: Since you do so many different RPGs ...
Date: 2006-04-04 03:20 am (UTC)Oh, and I'm free tomorrow night too, so should be up for movie watching.

The scary thing is a My Little Pony RPG might just sell...

Date: 2006-04-04 12:47 am (UTC)Ahh, you always give me the easy topics, don't you ;-)
I must confess I know very little about PocketPCs and similar creatures, and much less about running games on them. That said, your comments about Doom running just dandy on a 486 are accurate if memory serves me correctly (those were crazy days).
Having an ftp client is very cute.
I can't comment on Jabber because I don't do chat - I need that window of opportunity ;-)
What was your IE alternative?

Date: 2006-04-04 05:09 am (UTC)It was a magnificant combination (especially when drinking vodka that has flakes of gold in it). The particular tune that caught my attention was 'Amsterdam'; it has a degree of fury to it.
