Who thinks the United States should leave Iraq? Seventy-two percent of the troops, that's who. Meanwhile, there's a systematic campaign to assasinate Iraqi's who speak out against the occupation. Still, if Uncle Sam gets to remote control sharks such mutiny won't be a problem, right? The crook US election woes continue with votes cast in the middle of the night weeks before the election - and the machines have IR ports! (hat-tip to [livejournal.com profile] greylock) So, why aren't the Democrats screaming blue murder?

Have completed the first part of my new position as a MS-Access administrator, MS-SQL administrator and VBA coder. Have submitted enquiries on the long path towards MS-DBA creditation. God help me, this is so embarrassing. But kind of useful as well. Apart from that I've been steadily working on the T3 Program website, but as oft is the case dragging the content out of clients is a real pain!

The fifth playtest version RuneQuest has been released to a "hardcore" "inner circle" of playtesters, which apparently includes myself. This version has been largely drafted by Ken Hite and is much better than some of the previous material. However, it still feels rather short (they're aiming for a 96-112p basic book) and it's, well, rather souless (as in lacks POW). At least the rules are significantly more balanced and quite playable. I've been working through the rules with a fine tooth comb and will have my playtesters notes finished by this weekend.

On-topic also played Dogs In The Vineyard last week, courtesy of the Melbourne Role Playing Salon, organised by [livejournal.com profile] beingfrank. This little group is dedicated to playing independent and small press games of a few sessions each. DitV is based in an analgous Utah-Mormon country of the 19th century. The system allowed for narrativist escalation in conflicts (harsh words can lead to physical actions, then punching, then the guns come out) and involves a series of bids and raises based on appropriate attributes, traits and items. It's a neat idea but too many dice (and I say this as a hardened Champions player).

Social life has included a couple of visits to Brendan E. this week, after I missed his birthday lunch at Dragon Boat (seeming that I recommended the place, I feel particularly bad). I was somewhat thrown by the fact that the speaker didn't show for the Unitarian Church service and we had to arrange people on the spot.

Runequest? New version? (pricks up ears)
1) Is it Gloranthic?
2) does it used the Chaosium basic mechanics?

Ahh, now lets see... The basic rules are not tied to Glorantha and whilst it does use similar rules the Chaosium system (same stats, percentile rolls) it doesn't use the resistance table (a good thing, imo).

The split skill system (basic and advanced skills) is a nice touch. The latest playtest version isn't something that will change the gaming world, but it''s a solid product.

Playtest notes are here (although they may not make much sense without the rules):
