Sometimes weird things just happen to your life.

Like you hold a garage sale with a couple of computer books, and a week later you find yourself employed as the sysadmin for an Internet Service Provider; specifically Web Prophets. They seem pretty good. They treat their handful of staff very well, they treat their customers with an extraordinary degree of patience and loyalty, their kind to community organisations and they use FreeBSD. And now I'm their sysadmin now. Such luck.

Along with the website that I'm doing for James Nicholson (will be finished end of this week), the regular work I do for Borderlands, and some computer hardware sales it looks like December is going to be a good month for me.

Speaking of luck, a couple of weeks ago I went to an otherwise very expensive op-shop in the city. They had a very modern, nice Versace suit for sale - ticket price? $250 - which was about right, I reckon. Sale price? $4. But wait! Then there's more. Last week [livejournal.com profile] severina_242 and I went to an alumni fundraiser at RMIT for the Smith Family at the historic old Melbourne Courts (where Ned Kelly was sentenced, etc). Apart from a fantastic tour of the buildings both of us won a bottle of Moet and Chandon. Know what I'm drinking on NYE.

On Thurday I visited the executive meeting of Propser Australia - interesting bunch. Quite like the attitude of their President, a no nonsense sort of character. Thursday also saw me visit [livejournal.com profile] frou_frou's store and drop off some clothes to [livejournal.com profile] morgan303, and after that a symposium with Robert Reich and Mark Considine. The former has some very interesting things to say about the US election and the prospects of social democratic economic policy.

Apropos the Prosper Australia meeting, I've written to all state Labor MPs concerning Land Tax issues, which is getting a fair bit of press coverage. Several MPs have written back to me already - John Lenders, bless his cotton white socks, has reminded me that several years back that the Harvey Review recommended a flat rate of land tax of 3%. Which of course is the sensible option - but what would a report sourced from the best economists in the state know, right?

Meanwhile, some unarmed villagers in Nigeria have taken resource rents into their
own hands
.

Unitarian's this Sunday was Peter Abrehart drawing some rather disturbing links between the rise of the neoconservatives and religious fundamentalists in the U.S. It even has the mainline Protestants worried, let alone the Latin American Catholics.

Took the rats for a swim at St Kilda Beach on Saturday with [livejournal.com profile] caseopaya. Watching the Vodaphone Beach Volleyball was an incidental extra (it's a simple sport I actually enjoy). Harlequin, with the dodgy back leg, proved himself to be excellent at the task of swimming, spending several minutes following my hand around and keeping his nose above water. He even seemed to be thoroughly enjoying himself; Montebank wasn't too sure, and headed for shore as quickly as possible. He dug himself an impressive hole under my sandal to sleep in, however.

[livejournal.com profile] 17catherines has an informative diabetes website. Go visit.

Oh, look what's been revealed. Intelligence link cut over 'row on Indonesia'

Silly quiz, but good idea. What's your alignment?. *sigh* I'm neutral good, followed by lawful good, followed by chaotic good. Too much goodness all round. Whilst on-topic, From [livejournal.com profile] greg; Ian McFadyen's How to write a fantasy epic

I can now check off one of the goals in my life, which is, of course, top page mention in your journal!

Incidentally, the link to the "What's your alignment?" quiz need to be fixed. Not to mention 'your' rather than 'you're' ;-)

By the way, if I haven't thanked you back there, you've my gratitude on the colo information. I will run it down with my employers and make a decision. Of course, I have some other related questions that I'll zap to your email.

I really should spend more time when I'm composing livejournal updates.

No problems. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to arrange it, but serendipity intervened.

Congratulations on the job!

Let's see... I've got plenty of new books about Mongolia lying around, so logic would dictate that if I sell them at a garage sale next weekend I'll be offered a job as the Khan. Fantastic! :)

Only if your looking for a job as a Khan...

Anyway... what would you do if you were suddenly Khan? Apart from drink some fermented goats milk look across a barren plain and say "damn, we gotta move from this place!"

I really should be more careful when I do relative links.

Turns out this one wasn't a relative link problem. I'd manage to include the text title in the url link.

That's real bad :/

Hello, Lev-thing!

By "James Nicholson", do you mean MicroJames? Is he About?

Just thought I'd tell you (in case you Knew Not) that there's a gig you might be Interested In . . . KMFDM are playing at the Hi-Fi Bar (the old Wall Street, where the old Abcess used to be). $50, plus an after party at Carmilla's to follow.

To be honest I can't remember whether you were into them - you know what the wreckge of my memory is like - but at least they're trying to sing About something, which is rare enough days . . . and Bob knows we haven't seen you out in a while.

Except in church.

Got any ideas for Christmas? or are you doing a Family one in Kiwi?

Stein'll probably be up for something (though this time I think best not let him cook!). He's shaved off his beard - it's horrible! The Multiple Chin Horror!

I've been reading Arundhati Roy, which I find quite pithy and readable, especially for a Girl . . . Good "soundbite" phrases, good titles . . . this person should be a Lead Singer. Perhaps I'll try and recruit her for my (entirely imaginary) All-Girl Emergent Goth Band ("Her! And her Horses!") but, alas, at the moment I'm bust trying to fully realise (or rather fully fantasize) the "Squirming Gerbil Death" concept. I need to find and question a surgeon who's actually performed a Gerbilectomy . . . and hope it won't be the same one who's due to go back up my nose shortly.

Christ, it'll be nice to actually be able to breathe. If they get it right this time, that is. I'm not holding my breath . . . except that I am . . .

Stay well, anyway, and my best to your better half, and your rug-rats . . .

Yes it is microJames. He has been here for several years.

Knew that KDFM were in town but I'm not planning on seeing them.

Nice score on the job front :-). Picking up some full-time sysadmin work is on my To-Do List for early in the year as well.

If you're feeling particularly adventurous (or in a silly mood), have a play around with Debian GNU/FreeBSD ;-).

Hmmm... y'know, this chat about MicroJames and Jay's post makes me want to drag out some old tapes and listen to Burning Up/Adrenochrome again :-).

Well, it's not full-time, which is too my liking.

*snicker* Yeah, I have them tucked away somewhere as well...

TO hell with the job; $4 for a cool suit? You're my hero! And champagne to boot!

(okay, I'm really not that shallow...well, maybe I am...yeah, probably!)

Date: 2004-12-16 01:10 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com

Heh. The job means I'll be able to spend more than $4 on the suit and buy better champagne than my usual fare (Jacobs Creek or Lindaur) ;-)

Seriously, I like suits. I've managed to pick up some good ones in my time (and a few dodgy ones). One of the fortunate things about them is that they're out of fashion among the hip young things, and the business-types wouldn't be seen dead in an op-shop. So there's racks and racks of good suits available for an excellent price.
