Australia has lost one of its most important social and political leaders.
Dr. Jim Cairns
, chair of the Vietnam Moratorium movement, Deputy Prime Minister, economist and radical psychoanalyst died last Sunday aged 89.

A philosopher who sincerely believed in supposedly utopian objectives of peace, justice, freedom and - most importantly - love, Jim Cairns will be fondly remembered.

Dr. Cairns was the author of the first book on political theory that I ever read (at the ripe old age of twelve); "The Quiet Revolution". To say the least Cairns left a lasting impression on the development of my own social thought. After moving to Melbourne, I had the opportunity to meet him on a couple of occasions and have several lengthy telephone conversations. One of his last public acts was to open the "Labor Left Activists Conference" which I organized a some two years ago.

Within hours on the day that Dr. Cairns passed away, I was on the 'phone to co-conspirator Anthony Leong suggesting and then planning a memorial function. Anthony is organizing most of the event, speakers and so forth. I'm writing a summary of his personal and political thought to be distributed on the night and taking bookings.

It's on at Melbourne Town Hall on October 29, 7.00pm. Speakers will include the Premier of Victoria or nominee, either Frank or Simon Crean, former Federal Minister Tom Uren, former State MLC and fellow Vietnam war activist, Jean McLean, and the Mayor of the City of Melbourne, John So.

Prior bookings are essential and if you're sensible you'll book earlier rather than later. Leave a message here or ring me on 0409 861 528 if you wish to attend.

And that's what I'm doing over the next several days.
