Saturday's Software Freedom Day was a great success. We had 85 people attend to hear a series of lectures, engage in 3D printing, play games, fine-tune their installations, and collect more free software. The lunch went very well, with a big thanks to [personal profile] caseopaya for her assistance. The day was opened by a senior lecturer (and Lord Mayoral candidate), had an well-known author and comedian as an MC, and an international speaker. The day really had a good feeling about it. Following this was a smaller (but equally enthusiastic) meeting, the official formation of the Labor-Green Alliance at the United Voice offices. Over the next few weeks, we'll be putting together a thorough analysis of the need for such an alliance and contacting all relevant MPs.

Sunday morning was Rob Watts from RMIT speaking at the Unitarians on happiness and health in Australia, especially in reference to the unexpected findings of the Cochrane Collaboration. Nominations for the committee elections have closed; I have nominated for Treasurer, in yet another contested election. In a normal non-profit organisation, selecting a person with an MBA and non-profit finance experience should be a no-brainer. In the afternoon, played another session of Pathfinder. The GM has put us in a tricky lose-lose situation, where re-establishing the proper order requires the loss of the player-character's existing advantages in mortality. On Thursday evening played another session of Call of Cthulhu's Horror on the Orient Express at the asylum library; we're up to Laussane, which puts us about a quarter through. Also, my review of Ringworld was published on RPG.net

I'm glad that Labor-Green Alliance has been officially formed.

I hope it can grow into something meaningful... I must confess I'm not entirely that optimistic. But the need is sufficient to overcome such mental distractions.

I'm sorry to have to post this to you but I can't help agreeing with it . After all , they exterminated 100,000,000 Hindus when they invaded India . I detest racism , xenophobia and fascism but what CAN we do ? I was involved in multicultural education in England and had many African student friends who were Muslims -

Well, there are a couple of immediate points of disagreement that I have, but without getting into the details the title of "Basic incompatibility of Western thought and Muslim theocracy", encapsulates all the problems I have with the analysis.

It assumes that secular liberalism is a particular type of thought that can only be associated with "the West", which is deeply untrue. It also assumes that only "Muslim theocracy" is incompatible with secular liberalism compared with other types of theocracy.

The following two links should display how Muslims can be just as accepting of speech offensive to their religion without succumbing to the temptation of violence.
