Draft of subchapter 3.2 of the PhD ("Universal Access") completed.
Computer User's Manual for Ministry of Foreign Affairs printed and bound. Training starts this week.
I have decided to transcribe Cliff Morris' East Timor Travellers Dictionary for public access. Twenty pages completed this weekend.
I have developed the opinion that John Elliot is a danger to students of Princes Hill High School.
Race (in humans) doesn't exist in the scientific sense. This drives racists nuts. I've been having a great discussion on aus.politics...
With much pleasure (and damn relief), I announce the completion of another subchapter of my thesis: "Universal Access", weighing in at a hefty 13,600 words. Because this particular chapter required a lot of data collation and statistical correlations it has taken me close to a month to write.
Some interesting data: the strongest correlations between Internet access is with per capita income, the number of computers per capita, urbanization and international bandwidth. Disparities on the basis of gender and ethncity are largely structural distortions from income differences - and in developing countries, political differences.
Hopefully the next chapter, "Content Censorship" (seeming I've already written it) won't take as long.
In other news (announced in the last thread discussion), the 200pp Computer User's Manual for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, "Neon-Komputador" is completed. It has a very nice integrated circuit crocodile on the cover and many graphics snapped up by Severina_242. Casepoya did the tedious and efficient task of editing. My gratitude is eternal.
I'm a little less than impressed with those who collated the manual however. It seems that several pages are missing and several are out of order. I have to sort this out by tomorrow when I begin an intensive training course for the staff here.
In other news, I've transcribed some 20 pages of Cliff Morris' "East Timor Travellers Dictionary" to find its way on Project Gutenberg or some other online library. Assuming I can sort out the copyright issues relating to a dead author and a publishing company that no longer exists.
As for John Elliot, my good friend from aus.politics, "fasgnadh" <fasgnadh@yahoo.com>, posted this little gem to said newsgroup:
"Former Liberal Party President, John Elliot, gave some insight into his personal philosophy and priorities when in court to try and get back his licence after drink driving offences."
"He was prompted three times by magistrate Peter Mealy tocexpress the worst consequences of driving after drinking excessively" - The Herald Sun 2/8/03
"Bad publicity and inconvenience to his family." - Jack offered.
Try again.
"Mmmm, well, a heavy fine and possible jail."
Nah. The penny dropped
"If you are driving and drinking you can cause harm to others"
I was completely stunned. The guy is a robot, not a human being at all .....
Mr. Elliot, you're in a motor car. It is several hundred kilogrammes of steel and explosive fuel. You are travelling at least 65 klicks an hour. You're pissed as a newt that fell into a barrel of brandy because by some miracle Carlton have won a game of Aussie Rules. Of course, you've forgotten to turn your headlights on and it's 7pm in a Melbourne winter... You hoon past Princes Hill High School and a year 12 student steps on the road waving goodbye to her friends. She doesn't see your car.. What do you think might happen?
In that imperfect science of taxonomy, a race is a geographically circumscribed population with distinctive characteristics. A formal classification of a race is a subspecies. It does exist in the scientific sense in other species. But not in humans. I've had a great deal of fun recently explaining this to some people on aus.politics.
Two threads:
Race Denial:-Seeking Confusion & Anhilation. and
Recommendation for "The Enlightenment"
