Spent another weekend away, this time to Manututo on the north coast. The mountains rise sheer from the sea - you can go 100m inland and find yourself 1000m up. Excellent swimming opportunities along white sand beaches.
The PhD continues but with an end in sight. It's been a slow subchapter as I've had to collate empirical stats from diverse sources (language data, per capita income data, encoding methods etc). Very interesting research just the same, but it's sure takes a long time to compile - especially with the connection speeds that I'm working with.
Work had been weird. The UNDP didn't translate the computer manual quickly enough, so it looks like the printed version will only be in Portuguese and English and won't be out for a few more weeks. My arch enemy here, the most slack international I have had the misfortune to meet, has actually been promoted as a better person has moved on to a new staff position. Evidently the scum also rises.

Date: 2003-07-08 05:12 pm (UTC)Heheh... A far more subtle way of putting it.
Anything that's lightweight seems to find an avenue to success...

Vince fits so well, it's just a pity I couldn't fit the toilet in as well.

Except I'd have to be careful of Miss Havisham!

Date: 2003-07-08 05:15 pm (UTC)Well, I owe a lot of it to your dear self. Editing is usually a thankless task and invariably impossible when one is the author themselves.

It's very, very true. Even people whose grammar is good need a good and ruthless editor.

Date: 2003-07-09 05:42 pm (UTC)I have two pitiful excuses for my grammar...
1) This is livejournal. I tend to be a little more slack on grammar.
2) I've spent a year with multiple languages bouncing around in my head. Have you ever encountered Portuguese grammar? It can keep you entertained for ages trying to work out what sort of game they're playing!
The problem with being an author of a work is that you can read the same mistake over and over again and still not notice it because you know what you meant to write...
