The biggest criticism from reviewers is that it was too faithful to the comic; which I agree doesn't say too much for the director's imagination, but I am very glad that was the case. Watchmen was already a work of great imagination, and among fans there was some concern that it could easily turn into a train wreck. By being relatively modest in the changes (and making one big change that was correct in the narrative) that were made the integrity of the original is maintained.

At times I tried to watch it imagining I had not read the series, but that didn't work. However, [livejournal.com profile] caseopaya who is in that category however says that the film still worked well.
