Yes, the originals had just an inkling of an interesting background. So I got all the interesting bits and put them together.
The Elves of the Broken Tree Inn wanted Fwrack The Duck to release his elementals so they could send them against the Lunars and met the DragonNewt on the way; however one of the PCs is a Chalana Arroy priestess and therefore demands a resolution that doesn't involve violence against living things.
Most of the random creatures I left out... They were too, well, random.
It was strongly helped by the fact that one team insisted on using broad Scottish brogue throughout the entire session. Mind you, the characters were named Skye, Inverness, Stirling and Orkney (with a spirit ally named Mull... because we all know that Mull expands your mind and gives you Power).
Yes, it would be very useable for HeroQuest... I quite like HQs mechanics, but I also like the detail of RQ...
