I called my mother this morning, and her political commentary was:
"Did you watch the Debate? I didn't. I can't stand that Albanese man."
"Why is that, mum? Is it because he's 'not got what it takes'? Because I've seen predictions that that's the line the media would go with, and they've been religiously faithful to it. Or is it because idiots have been shouting demands for numbers at him and screaming it from the rooftops if he hesitates on any of them, even though nobody could possibly remember all of that and nobody seems to blink when Morrison just lies, makes shit up, and then denies it if anyone bothers to check. Or is it because his covid isolation shows that he has a functional and competent team behind him, so he doesn't have to remember everything all the time, but apparently even that's a problem because everyone assumes they're all like the Liberal front bench, where you wouldn't let any of the bastards behind you if you suspect they might be holding a knife."
"Oh, but Morrison has been doing so well with the Covid response."
"What? No, seriously, what? That was the State Premiers, and he personally opposed and obstructed all the things which kept you safe. I mean, he's saying he did all those things, and he's lying like a rug. It's the opposite of the truth."
"Well, he's been good for the economy."
"You know those a more lies, right, mum? He's been in the situation where he had to spend billions of dollars: where it was the right thing to do to throw around cash like a sailor on shore leave, and he still managed to screw it up and divert most of it to his billionaire mates where it wouldn't do any good?"
She changed the subject for some reason. But I despair about her changing her vote.
