The speed is really based on the idea of "extensive learning" which argues that when learning a language dive right in and absorb as much as possible as quickly as possible. Don't even bother about being correct, just explore as far as possible. After that, then revise and learn the nuances ("intensive learning").

I picked that up in a rather long introduction to a Spanish textbook, Dos Mundos. It seems to work.

Now, as for being conversatant, yes, I can make my way around Esperanto, French, German, basic Spanish, Italian, and Portugese. The others I am really on training wheels.
