"And she said 'yes'!"
May. 5th, 2020 10:39 pmWithout a doubt, today was one of the best days of my life.
It started in the wee hours of the morning of April 20, with a series of text conversations with
lei_loo. We were talking about our impending relationship of some unknown date in the future, complicated by the fact that she's living with her current boyfriend (a doomed relationship) and I'm living with my ex-partner. Difficult, I know, but such is the nature of the circumstances of our time. But I am very patient, and we've been star-crossed for far too long. She was perplexed by my patience, and I explained that if there was time once we've sorted our current affairs, then I will be happy. At 02:37 am I made the remark: "Maybe you can marry me on my deathbed. That way I can die a happy man with a smile on my face", and at 02:38 am she responded, "I would be honoured to marry you well before your deathbed my darling heart".
Thus, a scene was set. We had an impending appointment at the blood donor's centre on May 5th, and I gave the rather obvious hint, "I intend to change your life on that day. Strap yourself in, you're in for a hell of a ride." It was our second visit to the centre and, a little surprisingly, the reception staff asked her "Your partner in crime isn't here today?", as I was running a few minutes late. Goodness, we must have left an impression or something. As she was hooked up to the apheresis machine for a plasma donation, we exchanged a few messages by text, as I was seated in their café. I suggest that the blood bank is quite a sweet rendezvous, even if most people wouldn't consider it as such. In many ways, it is the perfect place for us. Simple acts of human kindness, coupled with technology, to save lives. Sometimes doing simple things can have an enormous effect; such is the Tao, so I've been told.
Motivated by expectations, lei_loo powered through the plasma donation, completing the entire process in around forty-five minutes. She joined me at the café, and I began a little speech. I said that we have the rest of our lives to make up for lost time. That I was so so glad to have been her friend for all these years and watched her become the wonderful person that she is and will be. And I thanked her for coming back into my life to awake me from a slumber, with love, passion, and inspiration. With this prelude, I made the proposal proper. I asked her to become my life partner, whenever the circumstances allowed for it, and in whatever form she desired - domestic relationship, civil union, civil registry marriage, church-bells wedding - although I didn't think the latter was really what she was after. It was at that point I offered a gift, an item to bind the moment. No, not a ring, but rather a Longines self-winder watch from the late 1960s, about the same age as myself, remarkably still in its shop box. All in recognition that of how precious the time is that we spend together.
It was 5 pm, May 5th, 2020. I asked her whether she would be my life partner. And she said 'yes'. We embraced, of course, and later as we travelled to our respective homes I asked her if her life had changed today. And this was she wrote:
"What an incredible future awaits us", she said. "The most incredible man that has loved me since he laid eyes on me and quietly watched me grow up. Yeah, that guy. He proposed to me today! At the blood donor center! It was perfect 💜"
I am so glad that we have a future together.
