Yesterday was a well-attended meeting of the LUV Beginners Workshop with Bianca Gibson giving a presentation on vim, mainly through the Vimtutor, which possibly could have a couple of other items (e.g., opening files a specific line). A disturbing upshot of the talk is that I've been introduced to vimgolf, handy practise for those who believe in hyper-efficient text editing. Also, in preparation for Linux Conf 2014, I've joined the organiser's list having been invited to act as a diversity officer. Finally I've cobbled together some cluster install notes for NWChem, which wasn't difficult as such, but rather time-consuming just the same.

The meeting of the Victorian Secular Lobby over potential changes to the Abortion Law Reform Act went well; Colleen Hartland is a very practical and down-to-earth speaker. My letter, to The Age was published, in response to one by a spokesperson from Doctors With Conscience (apparently only those who are anti-abortion have a conscience, amirite?). The problem with the idea of removing section 8 of the Act is mostly consequential - it will almost certainly lead to "backyard abortionists", with resultant fatalities from toxic shock etc. It is perhaps forgotten in our contemporary, "first-world" environment how bad the situation was forty years ago, or how unsafe abortion is a major cause of injury and death among women worldwide. But even aside from consequences, from a de-ontological ethic, one must also ask if referral or emergency procedure is made a matter of conscience on this issue, what other medical procedures will also fall in this category in the future?

In gaming news, finished the Romance Period from The Great Pendragon Campaign (in some ways more of literary meta-reconstruction than anything else), and held a second session of Masks of Nyarlathotep with the first insanity of the campaign (more to come). On Sunday played a session of GURPS Middle Earth, which has led to a debate on the role of normal vs linear distribution. Also have made a solid start on the next issue of RPG Review with a number of relevant articles on the theme of the great survivors of the RPG industry; D&D, Traveller, RuneQuest, and a couple of others.

Finally, [personal profile] caseopaya returned last night from her visits to western Germany, London, and Scotland with, as one would expect, many tales of adventure.
