After the e-Research Symposium we had a couple of days spare to explore Dunedin's surrounds. Took the opportunity to visit the end of the Otago peninsula which has a Royal Albatross colony, co-existing with some Victorian-era fortifications (the NZers were worried at the time that the Russians were going to invade). Day after that took the Taieri Gorge (it was gorgeous, haha) railway. On the final night went to see My Afternoons with Margueritte, a rather charming film (Gérard Depardieu plays the role very well) at the slightly garishly deco-restored Rialto. Later in the evening caught the overnight coach to Christchurch; the temperature dropped to -2 degrees and the driver eschewed the heater option. Finally boarding the plane to 6.45am I fell asleep before takeoff.

Back in Melbourne the first two major events was conducting two intensive HPC training courses for a small group (c16) researchers; repeats of those courses that I ran two weeks prior. A surprising degree of existing experience in the introductory course led that to finish quite quickly; the intermediate course however is quite grueling, starting with some more advanced Linux commands, regular expressions, scripting, sed/awk, more on Torque/Maiu, and some basic MPI compiling.

Tuesday night was the monthly LUV meeting. Whilst the two talks and discussion were excellent, unfortunately the normal notification for the meeting didn't go out and as a result attendance was unusually low (about 20). The meal afterwards at Maria's Trattoria is worthy of mention; best gnocchi I have ever had. On other Linux-related matters, currently posting from BarCamp Geelong which has proven to be an excellent event. Earlier this morning gave a presentation on The Competitive Advantage of Linux (ODP, notes included).
