When I was in East Timor I was very impressed by the effort people would go to create a friendly household environment on Christmas eve. You would walk the dark streets and everyone's home - and often even the burnt out shells of buildings - would be lit by candles with nativity scenes made from coloured paper and cardboard on display with family and friends sitting around them. They didn't have much, but the shared what they had, and they did so with a sense of community.
