The Big Move, Computer Issues, The Gaming Addiction

[livejournal.com profile] caseopaya and I managed to complete the big move on Saturday. The initial truck (at 11am) was too big to fit in the street so some other removalists turned up six hours later - and proceeded to take another six hours (two trips) to move all our things. It was a bit of a disaster really, and painful on the wallet. [livejournal.com profile] beagl and [livejournal.com profile] kimeros are expected this eve as the first overnight guests.

Other harsh things on the wallet (apart from doing my tax - a modest amount owed, which I expected) included the halogen backlight on my HP laptop giving up the ghost. Combined with the move this has meant no Internet for a few days *twitch*, *twitch*. Seriously, I'm coping just fine (my various inboxes only had about 300 emails when checked this morning).

Gaming events over the weekend included an opening session of In Nomine on Friday night and a game of Civilization on Sunday. The latter really is a great game, and I'm thinking of hosting a dinner party along the theme. Bread, dips and table wine I think.

Appropriately from [livejournal.com profile] horngirl. Addicted to World of Warcraft: "there's a hardcore psychological detox. We don't have to keep them under 24-hour medical supervision. We do have to keep a guard on the door to make sure they don't run away and go find an internet cafe."

Some years ago, I lost about eighteen months of my life to computer games. Now I abstain. I'm an online life-form. My physical self is merely an extension of my internet existence as it is. Imagine if I signed up for online gaming? I'd never see me again!

Congratulations on surviving the lumpy part of Moving House, and good luck with The Unpacking. That can take decades.

Decades

Tell me about it. I was moving archive boxes that were packed four years ago!

At least the good thing about moving is that it's a finite process. Sorry to hear it was such an ordeal for you!

Hope the In Nomine game goes well. Always wanted to play that one...

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 03:22 am (UTC)(link)

Moving is something I wish to do very little of! Unless it with a backpack and little else!

In Nomine looks like it'll be fun. I like the d666/d111 resolution system. Very cute.

Oooh, I've never played the Civ board game before.

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 04:10 am (UTC)(link)

Find someone who has a copy and give it a whirl. It really is good fun.

The Civ board game is awesome. I haven't played it in a while but I used to play it every now and then with some friends when I was in Canberra.

BTW, we will (finally) be coming to church again this Sunday. We've just had so much on recently, but we finally have a free Sunday this week. YAY! :)

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 04:03 am (UTC)(link)

Excellent! It'll be great to see you both again!

By the sounds of it we should do some boardgaming as well...

[identity profile] ser-pounce.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'd love to do some board gaming :)

See you Sunday!

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'd love to do some board gaming :)

Cool, I'll arrange another afternoon of Civilization... I reckon the others will be up for it...

[identity profile] ser-pounce.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
Cool. What others game do you play? I've got a few board games.

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 06:56 am (UTC)(link)

Oh, my collection includes Empires of the Middle Ages (which we once played a single game which lasted over two years), Kingmaker, Hacker, Diplomacy, BattleTech, The Forever War ....

I prefer combination strategy/diplomacy games like Civilization, Diplomacy and EMA.

[identity profile] belegdel.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
there's always the WOW boardgame ;P

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 08:18 am (UTC)(link)

Now that's an excersise in redundancy!

[identity profile] ser-pounce.livejournal.com 2006-08-21 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm more a fan of shorter board games, but I love the CIV board game.

And big, massive apologies for Sunday - we missed our train by 30 seconds! And connex being connex, there wasn't another one for ages. We hope to make church this Sunday.

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2006-08-21 04:20 am (UTC)(link)

OK, see you then...

Other harsh things on the wallet (apart from doing my tax - a modest amount owed, which I expected) included the halogen backlight on my HP laptop giving up the ghost.

Hey, at least you didn't have to give up your computer completely ;P

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 03:04 am (UTC)(link)

This is true (unlike your good self who came to the rescue). However it is no longer a laptop, but rather a very small desktop.

Which I suppose is nice in a way.

[identity profile] caseopaya.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Only till you get the other laptop working with Linux. I'll be good and will only just mention USB ports ;P~~~~

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 04:02 am (UTC)(link)

Yeah, well it's not happy with Fedora Core 5, that's for sure!

[identity profile] caseopaya.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
There is a magazine with a Suse 10.1 disk/dvd on it

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Where?

The last version of SuSE I have is a live CD.
