Brisbane Conferences, Random Amusements, Election Stuff
Last week managed to get MATLAB's Distributed Computing Toolbox installed with a separate licenses server and optimised for our new cluster, a few hours prior to taking the plane to Queensland. The Access Grid Workshop was quite informative. The core technology seems fairly good, but the user interface really needs some work - or at least that was my impressions of it. UQ also featured a very pleasant lake which seemed to be positively abundant with various wildlife; I was particularly impressed by the number of water dragons present. The journey to and from the campus from the city via the City Cat was also very enjoyable; especially on the evening after the workshop dinner during a tropical storm.
Whilst visiting I also met up with
drjon,
greenglowgirl and met
one_bat along with a host of other el-jay people at what is apparently a regular gathering known as "AromaMeet" (so named after the coffee house). Following day journeyed to the Next Level technology fair where I saw an old favourite Severed Heads perform (they were officially playing that night so it was a glorified sound check for the half-dozen people present) along with a few other bands, a couple of old movies and the Vintage Computer Club (which included the Commodore PET, VIC 20, many Apple II's, Amstrad and Kaypro and the Microbee).
My old Sydney home, which I knew as EBOM (Evil Brotherhood of Mutants) made an appearance in the Sydney Morning Herald as "Lanfranchi's". Thanks to the Internet I recently confirmed to myself the story of the Fish Man!. As a blast from the past
catbiscuit has discovered Ch 9's "community announcements" for vitamins etc from decades past. Nice work.
It appears that the Coalition's election "king hit" of (yawn) more tax cuts aren't as good as they first suggested. Actually, it may even be worse. John Quiggin reminds us that someone, long ago, made a similar sort of promise: What was his name again? (thank you
angel80. Various opinion polls continue to predict a landslide against the government.

Not Redfern, but nearby: Chippendale. Ambercrombie St, iirc.
You were there in '96? I was there in '95.
Crazy, crazy days.. But so much fun.

And it's getting smaller...
James McParlane and I shared a house in Perth in the early cyberpunk years. We talked about wild hopes and wild fears, most of which have come true sooner than we thought, whilst using an old Alpha Micro to have a LAN throughout the two duplexes. James was in a band called The Accelerated Men who achieved some brief and modest fame.

Well hello, how have you been?
Haven't tried Gutsy, but a couple of workmates have with very positive responses. Much better than Feisty... Maybe I'll do an apt-get dist upgrade tomorrow...

I did a clean install to a second hard drive, and dual booting is going smoothly.
I'm not too bad, been busy with various things. Right now, though, I havea Celeron 600 with 64MB of RAM on my operating table, and I'm trying to find a distro to feed it. Any ideas?

Hmmm... A mixed response then; I'd better check those out.
If a machine like that comes with fairly standard parts I'd be tempted to put FreeBSD on it..
OSDC?
Re: OSDC?
Ummm... No. As someone who hasn't done sufficient OS development I didn't really think I had anything to contribute :/
