Continental Melbourne, Dining, V for Vendetta, Moving, Gaming, Unitarians

My recollections of Melbourne as a continental city was impressed on my first visit in 1986. As such, it is always a bit of a rude shock when I'm confronted with the invasion from the outer suburbs of the limited Australian cultural expression of sport, sport and more sport, even if they are international events. The Commonwealth games disrupted public transport causing me to miss a lecture I was supposed to give (fortunately it has been postponed). The Grand Prix has been noisy as usual with the added bonus of screaming jet planes.

All this contrasts strongly with a delightful dinner last week with myself, [livejournal.com profile] caseopaya, [livejournal.com profile] severina_242 and [livejournal.com profile] _zombiemonkey at Borsch, Vodka and Tears on Chapel St. They were even playing one of my favourite European musicians, Jacques Brel. I know which Melbourne I prefer.

If there are people out there in el-jay land who still haven't seen it or would like to see it again, [livejournal.com profile] caseopaya and I are arranging a group to see V for Vendetta. Come around our place (1/40 Eildon Rd St Kilda) before 9pm this Wednesday the 5th) and we'll wander down to The George cinema (a mere three minutes walk away) to catch the 9.15pm session. Don't be late!

In other St. Kilda related news, we're seriously thinking of moving to Yarraville or similar. Real estate in St Kilda is overpriced at the moment, and I'm a little tired of drunks, tourists and drunk tourists. I'd much rather have the traditional junkies and whores back in my neighbourhood. At least they were quiet and didn't start fights in the street.

My livejournal entries wouldn't be complete without gaming news. Another session of Outbreak of Heresy last weekend which went very well. Finishing off my playtester's notes for Deluxe Basic Role Playing in the next couple of days. Also working on a mini-campaign based on The English Civil War, the Commonwealth and the Restoration, using said system. In the Melbourne Role Playing Salon, we've plotted out the next several months of gaming using mainly indie and narrativist systems - there's a couple more sessions of Dogs in the Vineyard, followed by Jeff running HeroQuest, then Erica is running Little Fears, Rafe will follow with In Nomine and finally I'll be running Everway. Along with an Easter Friday special one-off of GURPS Bunnies & Burrows.

This Sunday is a special event at the Melbourne Unitarian Church. A quality speaker of no less stature than Andrew Chalmers, President of Linux Users of Victoria, speaking on "Public Science and Proprietary Science". He doesn't know it yet, but I'm conducting the service. Afterwards, I'm also introducing the discussion for the Church Philosophy group on the topic "Commonwealth versus Stolenwealth" an elaboration into the nitty gritty of a service I gave last year on Providence and Common Wealth.

Let's know what you think. I loved the graphic novel (started reading that when it was serialised in WARRIOR magazine in the early 80s) and hope the film is a good adaptation of it.
