Back in Australia...

I'm back in Australia.

There is no malnourished children in the streets (which are paved and without open drains). There are no pigs, goats, buffalo, teckis or tokes. My rooster-based alarm clock has been replaced by an electronic one.

Showers consist of hot waters from taps rather than a bucket and a scoop. Toilets flush and you can put paper in them, rather than in the bin next too it. You can drink the tap water. The electricity supply (and Internet connections) seems consistent.

Grocery stores have aisles of pet food, junk food and lolly water. Tomatoes and bananas seem particularly bland.

Anyway, for those of you who are Melbourne based, I'm having a few drinks at Polly's Bar (401 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy) on Friday 19th September at 8pm. Later one we can wander down to Blue Velvet bar.

Hope to see you there... and apologies if you get this message multiple times.

Culture shock

Bread in bags? More than one varity of shampoo?

Why is it that culture shock always seems greater coming back to "civilization" than it is leaving it?

The first time in such a place really is a shock to the senses. After a while however one settles into the world of survival. And I suppose that's why returning can be so difficult. We're a million miles away from such a life.

Pity. I'm passing thru Melbourne today. Flying out to London this arvo.

Welcome back to the #1 country in last year's HDI!!!

Australia has the highest HDI? Wow, we've finally pipped Norway from top spot.
