Religion, the Common Wealth, Drupal and Games

Attended Sunday's service at the Melbourne Unitarian Church, a report back from the ICUU/ANZUUA Conference, which ruffled some well-nested feathers. On a related note I am using the Church as the organisation of study for my assignment on Strategic Management, because it could certainly do with some. I didn't speak myself as I'd given the service a few week's prior and will be giving the address this coming Sunday on "Strangers, Sojourners and Common Wealth" where I'll be combining some hints on the political economy of the Torah with the Henry Review into Australia's taxation system. On a related note, I have written to the two very conservative independents, Bob Katter and Tony Crook, presenting some ideas on why they should support the proposed mining tax. I've also started engaging in (mainly) daily 'blog with brief commentary on religious issues; comments invited (indeed, other 'blogs invited, if people so desire). The Church website has finally "opened up" to be more interactive and inviting for input using the various options available in my favourite CMS; Drupal.

Which brings me to the next topic; gave a brief presentation at the Monash eResearch eXPO on Drupal for eResearchers, with at least two research teams expressing serious interest in using Drupal as a collaborative framework, with a particular interest in Drupal's capabilities to search attachments and the very handy taxonomy module. Finally, [livejournal.com profile] ser_pounce and [livejournal.com profile] hathhalla visited last weekend; apart from their always enjoyable company it provided the opportunity to play Princes of Florence, a very clever boardgame which keeps the competition tight whilst allowing plenty of levers to pull and buttons to press.

I've got a Drupal for DWAITAS, but am fairly new to it.

Take it slowly... There's a *lot* to work with; fortunately with a modular system you can start slowly and build up from a solid foundation.

My main problem is trying to process forms to present them as a character sheet. CSS can only do so much.

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2010-08-31 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
You have print module installed?

[identity profile] curufea.livejournal.com 2010-08-31 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, but to have columns is difficult with CSS, it needs tables.

[identity profile] curufea.livejournal.com 2010-08-31 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
It may be possible if I keep the form inputs for the columns separate - have players fill out all the left column first, then the right column. Possibly that way I could have the DIVs align properly with CSS.

Here's an example character-

Have a look at the printer friendly version and you can see the problem.

On the plus side, I do have my dynamic character sheet for DWAITAS working all right on the Obsidian Portal website (which earned me 6 months of Ascendent status) :)

Actually the other problem I have is that I keep being sent reminders that an update is available for the date module, even though I've updated it several times. I'm not sure how to correct that.

[identity profile] curufea.livejournal.com 2010-08-31 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I actually have a cron job on the server for it (hence daily emails).

There must be some config file that makes it think it is an older version than it should be. It's probably the fault of the module designer.

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2010-08-31 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Well I suspect that :)

What version of Drupal and Date are you running? I have that module installed and it isn't causing me any grief...

[identity profile] curufea.livejournal.com 2010-08-31 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
date-6.x-2.6 and Drupal-6.19

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2010-08-31 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
OK, that's the same as I have as well (and up-to-date as well, I notice).

These updates that you're receiving, what are they being triggered by? The usual admin/reports/updates/settings ?

[identity profile] curufea.livejournal.com 2010-08-31 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
yeah-

"There are updates available for one or more of your modules or themes. To ensure the proper functioning of your site, you should update as soon as possible.

See the available updates page for more information:
"

I'll check the date_api.info on the site and see if is showing the right version.

[identity profile] curufea.livejournal.com 2010-08-31 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm
The update admin page says I only have
Date 6.x-2.4
installed!

This could be an answer-

[identity profile] curufea.livejournal.com 2010-08-31 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Kinda - as I'd have to give fairly intimate access to the Drupal for you to actually be able to help :)

I don't think you can help more than "it works for me" so I have to go through other modules and things and see where it falls down...

[identity profile] curufea.livejournal.com 2010-08-31 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Fixed now. FTPed over all the modules to a local drive to look at them. Turns out there was a date.info file in the jquery plugin that was overriding the correct one in the date module. Sorry for troubling you :)

Drupal is my hero.

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2010-08-30 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I admit to being favourably biased towards Drupal. I experimented with a range of CMS over the years (I was fond of PHPWebsite for a while) but Drupal won out simply due to the modular design and extensibility.

[identity profile] mr-figgy.livejournal.com 2010-08-30 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Drupal is one I get to hear about on the job all the time. But there's not much useful I can relay about it, not the least of reasons being the NDA. I can say that people tend to get it and make projects out of modifying it, hoping to replace some faulty existing framework but probably needing to make Drupal do things it won't do out of the box.

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2010-08-30 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It has a very good framework for hooks and callbacks which makes it fairly easy for people with even a modicum of programming skills to produce new modules. I like that.

SO,

The kid who was born rich enuf to afford to be a commie at Murdoch has made the most of his opportunities and become an MP.

Whats he like these days btw?

Re: Adam Bandt

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2010-09-04 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
A little off-topic, but still...

Born rich? I had no idea and never inquired. I always found him to live quite modestly. Certainly wasn't living in opulence when I visited his shared household in North Fitzroy many years ago.

What's he like now? As you mentioned, he's made the most of his opportunities and has become an MP without betraying his principles. I'd say that put him in the category of 'very competent'.

Apparently some people aren't going to like that.
