I suppose I really should mention...

... that I suggested to [livejournal.com profile] caseopaya that we get a civil union in accordance with Victorian law.

She said yes.

(I "blame", in part, [livejournal.com profile] airiefairie's excellent proposal for ending state-sanctioned marriage in favour of civil unions for all, and [livejournal.com profile] beagl and [livejournal.com profile] kimeros for cutting a similar path. Thanks for the inspiration.)

It just works on so many levels, doesn't it?

Yeah cos otherwise Calli and I would have been celebrating 13 years the other weekend rather than 10.

was actually discussion that with friends the other day.

the evolution of the modern marriage and how marriage as gone from an arrangement or forced thing (shotgun weddings and such)to the notion that love is some how ivolved in it (original discussion was over the young labour trying to get legal recognition for gay marriages).

one idea was that civil unions may become more common because of divorce and some marriages may end up being a business contract where certain conditions and material must be provided by both parties or it dissolved and things are owed.

all pretty interesting if you think about what may happen and what has come before. :)

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Evolution indeed. I think Heinlein explored the idea of the 'civil union contract' (with time limits no less!) on Stranger in a Strange Land.

[identity profile] the-shadow298.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't read that yet but that was the basic idea.

as well as arranged (either by government, religion or corporations) unions with certain goals for the marriage, such as to have a certain number of children or provide certain things in exchange, all to be reached within a a time frame and limit.

makes fertile grounds for Speculative Fiction and Sci/Fi.

Thank you! I'm on leave, and TheMadProfessor is away, but I'll be back on Monday - remind me what you need from us, and I'll organise it then.

Wow! Felicitations, and best wishes to you both!

Hang on, are there more benefits/protections granted to those in civil unions than for cohabiting de facto couples? Not questioning your choice at all, just wondering if my understanding was incorrect...

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
My reading of the Relationships Act (2008) is that the benefits only accrue for registered de facto couples. i.e., in a civil union. I might be wrong there tho', I haven't read the Act in detail etc.

Not exactly the first priority in this decision ;)

Well, not now that you've gone announcing your intentions to all and sundry, you can't. ;D

I had my wedding in an aikido dojo, so I'm not going to criticize :)

Congrats!

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Heheh.. You would say that! :)

I'm wondering if there's an option for people, if they so wish (because I suspect there is a few), to change their status of marriage to a civil union?

(Obviously with jurisdiction caveats etc)

Excellent.

[identity profile] imajica-lj.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
This is magnificent news.
I'm so proud of you both.

[identity profile] beagl.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
In NZ it is apparently quite easy to transfer your status from marriage to civil union and vice versa - as long as you're a man and a woman. I know a couple who did.

Time to get rid of marriage...

Congratulations!
