SuSE and regrades, RPG Reviews, Weirdness by News

Last Tuesday visited the Melbourne Novell Users Group meeting with [livejournal.com profile] imajica_lj which had an interesting "where we are going" news section from Craig Wiley, which was quite pro-opensource, a big change for Novell. The following day however was an ironic decision. Despite being quite fond of OpenSuSE, my desktop machine just ain't up to the hardware requirements. So after careful consideration I've embarked on a radical downgraderegrade of my software to... Red Hat 8.0Debian Sarge. Some might think I'm crazy but it actually suits my needs and the hardware in question.

In RPG news [livejournal.com profile] caseopaya ran "Little Fears" on Friday. On Saturday we had a delightful visit from the soon-to-be-wed [livejournal.com profile] ser_pounce and [livejournal.com profile] wolf_in_winter and played the hilarious Munchkin. Sunday was the Norman Britain AD&D game where the noble venturers sought out the final base of the slavers at the Balaeric Isles (or, in gaming terms), managed to get 2/3rd of the way through module A3. Review-wise on RPG.net I've added Slave Pits of the Undercity, The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, Glorantha's Elder Secrets, Megatraveller's Imperial Encyclopedia.

Mixed weirdness. A parrot names N'kisi has a vocabulary of 950 words, correct grammatical structure and a sense of humour, via [livejournal.com profile] p_cat. Parroting to his master, Prime Minister JoHo lands in hot water over saying a vote for Barak Obama was, effectively, supporting terrorism. Via [livejournal.com profile] trayce with my letter to The Age on the matter. A DNA swab on Pauline Hanson reveals a good third of her genes is mid-eastern and medittereanean. She mentions eras of "rape and pillage" in response. Seriously fubar; A cop ejaculates over a motorist and walks.

[identity profile] greylock.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
When told of the results, the former fish and chip shop owner appeared flustered, making references to "rape and pillage" in ancient times, adding: "All I can think of is that probably down the track it eventuated from some war.

Woah. That is some really poor journalism there.

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)

What do you mean?

[identity profile] greylock.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if she's going to go on about 'rape and pillage' they should at least provide a more coherent version of her comments.
As written the story implies she believes an ancestor was raped, but without getting a clearer sense of her actual words we are left to trust the Sunday Mail's interpretation.

I mean the opening par mentions she is "... Middle Eastern heritage".

If we discount the Turkish connection, I hardly think a prognosed 9% of Middle Eastern DNA means she is "... of Middle Eastern heritage" - assuming this isn't junk science in the first place.

And, I really distrust an article where "Turkey (is) defined as southeastern European". Most of Turkey is in Asia, after all.

Re the DNA testing.

[identity profile] kits-the-dm.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently Thomas Jefferson also has some Middle Eastern genes.
Could it be likely that the issue at hand is that most people have more commonalities than Scientists previously realised? :)

Mind you, Turkey is pretty far down the track of EU membership, So "southeastern European" isn't a wildly inaccurate description.

"most people have more commonalities than most people previously realised"

Fixed that for you. I think all it really conveys, once again, is how stupid bigotry really is. Oh, and Pauline Hanson is stupid and ugly.

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 01:59 am (UTC)(link)

I suspect she wasn't coherent in her comments ;-)

Turkey is a tricky one as the turkic people are geographically from all over the place - these days one will find them in southern Russia, Bulgaria, Khazakstan and Siberia. It's an odd one.

Apparently Thomas Jefferson also has some Middle Eastern genes.

How did they discover that? DNA studies of his descendants?

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 02:01 am (UTC)(link)

That part is certainly true. The Turkish turks would certainly like to consider themselves part of Europe.

you mean people aren't Scientists? For shame!

apparently so.
here's the link

err.. what?

WHAT??!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Re the DNA testing.

[identity profile] kits-the-dm.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh sorry, I meant... you mean Scientists aren't people too? ;)

I've embarked on a radical downgrade of my software to... Red Hat 8.0.

[identity profile] imajica-lj.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Dude wtf ... just install debian.

Re: Re the DNA testing.

[identity profile] jahbulon.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Welll.. I think scientists are more aware of our genetic similarities than the general populace.

Scientists are more human than humans.

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 03:22 am (UTC)(link)

It's true. My character has a magical plastic sword and stoner uncle called Bob who reads "The Hobbit" to us.

Re: I've embarked on a radical downgrade of my software to... Red Hat 8.0.

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 03:30 am (UTC)(link)

If I had a copy of the distro I probably would give another go.

Scientists is soylent green.

Re: Re the DNA testing.

[identity profile] lederhosen.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I think most scientists who work in this area have been aware of this for a long time; it just hasn't got through to the general public yet.

Re: Re the DNA testing.

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 05:38 am (UTC)(link)

Knowledge by osmosis! Eat a scientist today!

Re: Re the DNA testing.

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 05:48 am (UTC)(link)

I tend to agree with this as well; although there is a stubborn few who still promote the veracity of 'hard and fast' racial distinctions among the species.

Re: I've embarked on a radical downgrade of my software to... Red Hat 8.0.

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 06:36 am (UTC)(link)

See modified entry, I've found my copy of Sarge...

Now to wait for the security updates to download....

[identity profile] hathhalla.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
Much enjoyed the Saturday gaming :) (yes, I have reincarnated in LJ land- I feel like a cylon). Tummy was also more then satisfied.

Re the cop- that's wrong, just plain wrong- I can't manage anything more incisive than that, but I really don't think there's a need to.

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 10:14 am (UTC)(link)

Aha! I was hoping the constant references might entice you back to the fold ;-)

Yeah, that was one bad cop.

Re: I've embarked on a radical downgrade of my software to... Red Hat 8.0.

[identity profile] zey.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'd actually suggest updating to Etch (Testing) for a desktop box. X.org blows XFree86 out of the water.

Just edit your /etc/apt/sources.list, do a quick s/sarge/etch/, apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade, and it'll update you fairly painlessly. (Try doing that sort of thing with a lot of other distros and you'd be stuck; one of the main reasons Debian rocks in server space.)

Re: I've embarked on a radical downgrade of my software to... Red Hat 8.0.

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 10:20 am (UTC)(link)

Baby steps pls.. The last time I worked with Debian (apart from its famous child Ubuntu) was in Timor Leste (and I quickly bailed on it at that point).

[identity profile] hathhalla.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
Of course they would... that and my slow emergence from the sooky disease of doom...

Bad cop, but bad system that allowed him to be released... though methinks construction work seems to be an apt calling for him (stereotype, I know, but...)

Re: I've embarked on a radical downgrade of my software to... Red Hat 8.0.

[identity profile] tau-iota-mu-c.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
X.org would blow Xfree86 out of the water if it weren't for the regressions that have been unfixed in the debian BTS (and submitted upstream) for at least 18 months. Sucks to not be able to suspend to RAM using the bios APM anymore. Sucks to ignore provided modelines and not be able to display at higher resolution and differing frequencies than the 60Hz internal LCD, on the external unrelated VGA-out anymore.

Bah. But at long as it is Shiny! and can do wobbly transparent things.

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)

*shakes head* Trial by jury.. To think that incidents like this end up being an anti-democratic argument.

[identity profile] strang-er.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
What gets me about that story is that even if they couldn't prove beyond a reasonable doubt who initiated the act, the cop still accepted sexual favours then let an unlicenced driver go. Surely that has to count as corruption, even if the coersion can't be proven.

At the very least i'd hope he'll never work as a cop again.

[identity profile] grailchaser.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Fairly typical fair from the Media. Misquotes and Hanson are pretty much de rigour if it will create headlines.

I'd like to know how they were distinguishing between Middle Eastern and Greek/Macedonian DNA? Alexander rampaged through the entire Middle East in BC and the Seljeks and Ottomans rampaged through Greece and Eastern Europe in AD. Talk about a melting pot for alleles.

And is Semetic DNA included in the Middle East profile? I bet she'd love to find out she's part Jewish. :)

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)

You know, I've been doing just that ;-)

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)

Yeah, that's a good one. Maybe - as a scientist vaguely qualified in the area - you could send them an email of the inquiry and post their response.

First mate TCPIP

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)

IIRC he has been sacked.
