New Zealand, Solstice, Stolen Wages, Gaming, Threads

Well, tickets to Bali were next to impossible to get at a reasonable price, so [livejournal.com profile] caseopaya and I are heading to the South Island of New Zealand in the New Year (gee, anyone would think I like the place or something). Currently thinking of a tour from ChCh to Dunedin to Invercargill to Te Anau to Queenstown to Wanaka to Twizel then back to ChCh. Should be manageable in six days ;-)

Last Sunday attended the Unitarian Church concert, which was the usual standard. Special guest in attendance was [livejournal.com profile] missmilky. Monies raised, on my asking, went to the indigenous Stolen Wages campaign, of which I gave an impassioned speech. The Australian Senate has come down with a report on this issue just a fortnight ago. It will probably become a major issue in 2007. Solstice dinner was with [livejournal.com profile] severina_242, [livejournal.com profile] _zombiemonkey and [livejournal.com profile] caseopaya. We chewed the fat, drank a lot, and I ended up letting [livejournal.com profile] severina_242 cut my hair; I now have an eighties style bob with fringe.

Have received several games over the past few days; treated myself to PDFs of Dogs in The Vineyard and the most excellent Kill Puppies for Satan (you've got to read the hate mail). Have borrowed [livejournal.com profile] _zombiemonkey's copy of Over The Edge for more inspiration. Have also received a heartbreaker' in the form of a game called 'Fantasy Imperium' which the author sent me. Physically, it's a magnificant piece of work. Hardbound, good binding, good art, over 500 pages.. but sweet Jesus, the game sucks.

Hat-tip to [livejournal.com profile] greylock. The nuclear war film, "Threads" on is avaible on Google video. If you're under 25 you need to see this to understand people my age. No really, you do.

Nah, somethings I won't do for the sake of roleplaying. It's not important enough.

The system has been used by others, I've seen it now and then - so apart from the setting it doesn't look that worthwhile to me. Nothing new system wise.

However the setting and premise look funny :)

Sure, the theme is exceptional: how low will one stoop to gain a little bit of magical power? Will you kill puppies for Satan?

Nothing new system wise.

An alternative system is also provided, taken directly from Sorcerer...

Oh, and system stats vary according to what sort of critter you are. That's cute.

Yah, but I don't think it's a keeper. A once off now and then, but no longterm gaming fun there.

I actually disagree. As a once off it would be silly fun, an opportunity to let off steam after playing good guys in a four-colour world for too long.

But I also reckon it would work in the long run, although it would become increasingly disturbed. Satan doesn't give out his powers without compensation and he knows the PKs are like strung out addicts; they've got a taste for supernatural power, and want more. Killing puppies is just the beginning of their downward descent for the tragic and pathological power addict.

"Just how far can they go?" Is the long term question..

Wouldn't it lose it's theme then? Go from comedy into horror?

Have you run it yet? Let me know how a few games go..

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2006-12-23 07:28 am (UTC)(link)

Heck, I only downloaded it yesterday! ;-)

[identity profile] curufea.livejournal.com 2006-12-23 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
So - how else can you celebrate Christmas? What better way than killing puppies for Satan?

[identity profile] tcpip.livejournal.com 2006-12-23 07:35 am (UTC)(link)

Heheh... I like your style.

See what I can arrange.

I intend on playing lots of board games on Boxing day myself :)

I actually think the underlying theme is horror. Comedy is just the surface theme. It's really quite clever that way; a lot more complex than a passing glance suggests.
