We are of like opinion that the action has simply made Rushdie's works more popular again, and no, it wasn't attacking Islam. The entire Satanic Verses component is a dream fugue, for starters.

The Ayatollah basically didn't like that Rushdie was having a swipe at him. The fatwa is evidence of his weakness.
