It is recommended, mainly because the gall bladder was a repository for when hunter-gatherers would encounter a particularly large serving of fats (e.g., "we've got a mammoth!"). In a very few cases people without a gall bladder discover that they are "a little loose" after eating fatty foods because the fats haven't broken down.

This said, I seem to be doing OK so far. It'll be a month until I am fully recovered and can do weights and mad cycling again.
