UEFI and MS-Windows 8, Aliens and Seminary, Work Changes

The next issue of MS-Windows promises to bring a whole new world of monopolistic behaviour to the computing world. Specifically MS-Windows 8 will require that secure boot will be installed for certification, which is fine in itself; BIOS really is a technology past its use-by date. However this will, in all probability, be used to prevent dual-booting with other operating systems like you-know-what. I have a presentation (PDF) on this topic from last Tuesday at Linux Users of Victoria and the policy we have developed. Since then zey has pointed out that "the slow moving train wreck" of a company has decided it would be good to include in its terms of service the right of the company to remotely kill or delete applications that you have purchased.

On Sunday gave an address at the the Melbourne Unitarian Church on aliens, or more specifically entitled "Is Anybody Out There? Little Green Men and the Fermi Paradox", which gave a brief introduction to the issue that space is so big and old and yet otherworldly life has yet to be discovered. Of course, people always raise the cost of scanning the sky for such and whilst it is notable, it is certainly preferred to most military expenditures. Apropos churchy matters, I have made a substantial start on the three-chapter bloc on studies on Abrahamic religions and should have the Judaism material finished this week. Finally, tonight the Melbourne Atheist Society is having a discussion on "Science and the Objectivity Myth", which hopefully will deal with pragmatics rather than just representational realism.

There have been some significant changes at work; from a staff of around fifty, six positions were made redundant, two others took voluntary redundancy, managers took pay cuts and other staff reduced their hours. I was one of the latter group, adopting what should be a pleasant four-day working week over summer. Nevertheless, I really feel for those people who have lost their jobs, an awful experience for those with families and mortgages etc. Although on the latter matter, we were doubly fortunate this week in shifting our mortgage (with our strongly recommended union-owned, ME Bank) to an offset account which, coupled with a recent drop in interest rates, now has the lowest rate in the country - and resulting in a "not insignificant" saving.

You forgot to mention the compulsory update to the XBox that includes the t&c that you cannot sue Microsoft or join in any group action against them.

Mind you, none of this stuff is exactly new to M$. As always, M$ is merely copying Apple and Sony.

I did an astrobiology subject last semester (more like an introduction to), and I found it really fascinating. It's becoming quite a popular research field at the moment, especially with all of the exoplanets being discovered lately (Kepler etc).

About Islam in general - when I was involved in Multicultural Education and the Redbridge Council of Faiths in London , not to mention the World Congress of Faiths , I knew many wonderful Muslims and I had Muslim African students among my friends . However , I DO have problems with Wahabi and Salafi fanaticism and violence . I think Bush has much to answer for , but Islam is Jihadi in its essence -e.g. 100 million Hindus were slaughtered during the muslim invasion of India ! I support the ex-Muslims dissidents too .

Sorry to bother you again ! I realize how busy you must be . However , you mentioned how immensely distorted messages in Esperanto can become on the internet with the original orthography , which I can confirm with mine on an Esperanto Yahoo group .
However , messages elsewhere on the web do get through , such as this one which I've just spotted the one below . How come ?

Antaŭ 4 tagoj, la Programo Mia Amiko estis lanĉita por omaĝi nian grandan Zamenhof.
La celo de nia programo estas unuigi portugallingvajn "Interesatojn pri Esperanto" (IE) kun "Amika Esperantisto" (AE).

La programo estas jam granda sukceso!

Preskaŭ 60 homoj jam enskribiĝis por esti IE-oj.
Ni jam havas registrite 18 AE-ojn.

Dekomence, la programo estis elpensita por esti nur brazila, tamen unu portugalino jam enregistriĝis kiel IE kaj alia esperantista litovino sendis sian registriĝon por AE. Tio jam ŝvebas transnaciiĝon de la programo. Ni ja havos duan fazon en la programo, kiam ni alvokos tutmondan esperantistaron por esti "internacia esperantista amiko" de niaj IE-oj kaj tiel helpi la daŭrigon de niaj bakitoj post atingo de ŝufiĉa lingva nivelo por krozi nian movadon. La portugallingva programo daŭros 10-semajnojn. La daŭrigado ankoraŭ ne estis elpensita, tamen certe reliefigos interkulturan esploradon.

Guglo tre kompetente arigas niajn interesatojn pri Esperanto. Tiuj alvenintoj estas veraj trezoroj por nia movado. Tiel ni fariĝas tre respondeca pri ilia progreso. Ĉu ili restos aŭ ne en niaj rondoj, dependos de niaj argumentoj kaj ŝvitaj konvinkiĝoj, kaj instruante la lingvon kaj montrante nia monda movado. Do, mi petEGas al tiuj, kiuj volas restigi tiujn ĵusalvenintojn, ke vi volontulu inter ni. En tiu fazo de la programo, ni dependas de portugallingvaj "esperantistaj amikoj". Nia programo estas por formi esperantistojn, ne simplajn esperanto-konantojn . Nur esperantistoj vere diskonigas nian lingvon.
