Not sure if you ever read this (http://lhote.blogspot.com/2011/01/blindspot.html) but I feel that, certainly in the US, there really is no such thing as a substantive left anymore. Certainly, it was never in vogue to be a socialist or communist in America but it seems like, as you've speculated here, the general left isn't as 'left' as it once was.
